Publications on art

The results of the studies were also published in a number of exhibition catalogues.

They include catalogues on Gerard and Cornelis van Spaendonck with a full oeuvre catalogue, Jan Davidsz de Heem and his circle and Jan van Huysum and his circle.

Other highlights include A Flowery Past and Flowers and Nature both on the topic of flower still-lifes, A Fruitful Past on fruit pieces, A Prosperous Past which deals with sumptuous still-lifes and Tulips Portrayed on the tulip in art, identifications of the flowers in the paintings and drawings by Georg Flegel, identification of the flowers in two albums by Franciscus de Geest, and Belief in Nature on flower symbolism. In 1985, A Fruitful Past was awarded the biennial Buchelius prize for Dutch art-historical publications and, in 2000, the biennial prize of the European Foundation for Advancement of International Art.

Sam has worked on catalogues for museums in Holland, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Belgium, France, the United States, Australia and Japan. Some formerly announced preparations in the first edition of this website and elsewhere have been taken by others. For example, De Heem (this large documentation contains over 40 boxes) and an annotated reprint of Jacob Hoefnagels Archetypa was taken by someone neglecting an agreement on their cooperation. Also a nearly complete preparation for a new Adriaen Coorte oeuvre catalogue was taken on by someone else.
